NYC Fall Fashion Week 09 Wrap Up

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

by Courtney Minor.

NYC Fall Fashion Week 09 is officially over. I looked at all of the
collections, sorted through them, found my favorites, and now I’m
here to report the trends. But first, my favorite collection of the season:

3.1 Phillip Lim
If you want to be the coolest chick at the party, you better be wearing one of Lim’s sparkling dresses.

Shine-On
Fall 2009 will not be short of sparkling personalities: sequins, metallics, and glittering materials were covering the runway this season. Dresses, skirts, coats, tops… it’s all sequined-out.

Fur
Fur was seen all over the runways this season, which won’t make some people too happy. Fur coats, fur vests, fur shawls, fur hats, fur on bags and shoes…
f7Phillip Lim (above) used fur this season in ways that other designers didn’t; he made two really great pieces, a tube dress and a full mini-skirt, using fur. They add a little bit of luxury to an otherwise young, feminine, edgy collection.

Alexandre Herchovitch (below) also used fur interestingly on a couple of mini dresses.

j8Rocker-Chic
Leather jackets, studs & pyramids, lean black pants, t-shirts, gothic lace, chains, legging, fishnets, and leather; most collections included at least one of these elements.

Jesse Rose CoverHot Chip fans!  Jesse Rose is about to take you through one of the best subway rides of the year, even if you’re the one standing up.  His recently released album What Do You Do If You Don’t? hit the fan on the 23rd.  This one’s one to get in line for (that’s not another title, we’re really telling you to go get in line and pick it up, oh wait, you don’t get in line anymore you can just click ‘buy’).  The beats are consistent and not, just like this sentence, and what we love the most about it: variety. But enough about me, go on and get a listen! 5 out of 5 stars.  Our favorites: “Touch My Horn”, and “Night at the Dogs”.

FUNERAL PARTY.

Monday, February 16th, 2009

Funeral Party

Funeral Party is a three-piece indie-alternative band from Whittier, California drawn together by fate and a desirous dream to make music.”Funeral Party” is a name derived from a ripping track from The Cure’s 1981 album Faith. Although the name-inspired track echoes a heavy-hearted melody, Chad Elliott, James Torres and Kimo encapsulates sound that is nothing short of being danceable. From backyard parties to international tours, Funeral Party is penetrating the music scene with a refreshing new sound so contagious you can’t help but stir to the infectious beats.

Q: How did Funeral Party pick out its bad name ?
A: The band name comes from a track off of the Cures 1981 album faith.
It’s probably the most depressing song you can listen to I read somewhere that it’s about Robert’ Smith’s grandparents dying .

Q:How did Funeral Party start off?
A: Like any other band. 3 guys, no money, no equipment, and a dream.

Q:What drew you guys to work together?
A:We all kind of knew of each other from high school and what not, it was really just a matter of (as cheesy as it sounds) fate.

Q:What is your best and worst memory as a band?
A:I guess you can say that the first time we set out to do our own mini first tour up North falls into both those categories .

Q:What would you wear to a funeral party?
A: A smile and nothing else .

Q: Are you working on anything at the moment?
A: We are just finishing up the mixing on our first full length album! It sounds fucking amazing! It’s coming out around April so look around for it. Besides that we’re setting out on tour again then we’ll probably do another one in support of the album

Q:Who is your muse and what inspires you?
A:Too many names to name off….I think what’s really an inspiration is the feeling you get when you find something new in the things you were already used to.

Q:what’s on your playlist?
A:”Wild Heart”- Abe Vigoda
“Kings Of The Wild Frontier”- Adam And The Ants
“Interesting Results”- Ariel Pink
“Dead Finks Don’t Talk” - Brain Eno
“Strangers In the Wind” - Cut copy
“five years”- David Bowie
“(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”- Devo
“Porcupine”- Echo and the Bunnymen
“Own Nothing”- Friends in the Mountains
“Insight”- Joy Division
“Gobbledigook” - Sigur Rós
bla bla bla

Q:Who would you like to play with someday?
A:The Velvet Underground and any other great band that’s broken up
.

Q:Where are the groupies?
A:Sleeping… being part time models and high school students
. (Haha.)

Q:Where do you guys like to hang out?
A: Anywhere away from glow sticks and un-creased baseball hats. You know that place?

Q:Will you be coachillin this yr?
A:My bloody Valentine sounds intriguing enough but I hate festivals plus its too fucking hot
.

Q:What do you live off when you go on tour?
A:Nasty gas station food .(Nutritious.)

Q:Before becoming full time musicians, what did you guys want to be?
A: A bounty hunter or booty hunter.

Q:What has been your biggest challenge as a band?
A:When your out to take over the world everything can seem like a challenge

Q:Can I have a free t shirt?
A:I’ll trade you for one of yours
